The Legacy Circle Women’s Drum Cypher is an empowerment through the arts musical project of The Legacy Circle. They are an all-women’s drum troupe specializing in Afro-Dominican and Afro-Puerto Rican traditions. These women are NYC’s most gifted female song-writers, drummers, singers, and dancers of Afro-Caribbean music, including Palos, Congos, Salves, and Bomba. The cypher makes music that celebrates the fiery, nurturing, defiant, yet wise touch that mujeres have. “We recognize that we possess feminine power that holds up our community, and honor the immense contributions women make everyday.” Their performances include original and fusion songs, and they are a part of the process of building sisterhood with each other and imbuing our audiences with joy and strength.
Directed by Manuela Arciniegas, percussion, Ines Mangual, Julia Gutierrez-Rivera, percussion, Nina Paulino, Kaila Paulino, Yelimara Concepcion, & Maria Eugenia Rivera on vocals. The LC Women’s Drum Cypher has performed at El Museo del Barrio, Shire NYC, Brooklyn Lyceum, Schomburg, and other venues. www.thelegacycircle.org/womens_drum_cypher
